Press release A leg that changes everything
The arrivals continue to succeed in Les Sables d'Olonne. After Vincent Barnaud (NorthStar) who has managed to bring his ship despite its dismasting, it is Jean-Marie Oger (JMO Sailing), Robert Rosenjacobson (NED 602) and Louis Mauffret (Abri & Co Solidarité) who arrived safely. The second leg will, ultimately, messed up the rankings of the race. The podium of prototypes cannot be more international; and for series, the second leg will permit the return of miles from anywhere of some competitors.
This second leg, even faster than the first will nevertheless caused considerable differences between the competitors. A weather a little more muscle than in the first leg and a rough sea has won on expectations of different skippers, grappling with technical damages more or less important. Without forgetting the differences of trajectories which have been fatal for some, particularly sailors left in the south, which have not been able or failed to readjust in time on the north road.
Thus Jörg Riechers (mare.de) could only concede, as a good player, his losing to a Bertrand Delesne (Prati'Buches) in a state of grace. The German navigator, who obviously had more difficulty to slide downwind than his main opponent, acknowledged that he had not found the right timing to readjust. Finaly, a finish at the sixth place on the leg, more than fifteen hours of the leader. Another big loser in the second leg, Sébastien Rogues (EOLE Generation GDF Suez), which for less than a minute, saw the fourth place overall escape him in favor of Sebastien Picault (Kickers). This step allowed place for outsiders since Vincent Barnaud (NorthStar), before he dismasted, was on the rails for a third place overall in the race.
In series, apart from Jean-Marc Allaire (AG2R La Mondiale Baker Tilly) who, in the wake of an imperial Xavier Macaire (Starter) advantage of the failure of Davy Beaudart (Innovea Environnement), Amaury Francois (amauryfrancois.com) make the best operation of the leg. Relegated to the departure of Horta nearly fifteen hours of the leader and more than six hours of the podium, he succeed, in the light of a stubborn race, to climb on the podium in front of Jean-Marie Oger (JMO Sailing), which also compensates for his ten hours behind the leader. Robert Rosenjacobson (NED 602) completes the top five of the series boats.
This second step is, in all cases, the evident demonstration, that in matters of sailing race, it is useless to draw upon a star, dream with color. The race that might seem relatively locked to the arrival of Horta has finally delivered a decided verdict, far from the judgments of Solomon that could be expected at the start of the Azores.
The long road
While more than one third of the fleet has already taken up Les Sables d’Olonne in the sun returned, the majority of production boats continue to advance with difficulty in the Bay of Biscay almost too quiet. Vincent Kerbouriou (CGG Veritas) and Hugo Lavayssière (Herve Sail Design) are fighting for sixth place on the leg with Davy Beaudart. Ysbrand Endt (Mediabrein) who confirmed having dismasted, must take his troubles patiently. Clément Bouyssou (no war) alternates phases of speed quite decent, with moments where his boat moving forwards more than two or three knots. As he said to a support boat, Clement is struggling with a problem of pilot and must tries when he decides to sleep. In proto Benoit Lenglet (Evasol) and Pascal Chombart de Lauwe (Xanlite) compete for the right symbolic to finish the first Nacira 6.50, future boat series, which looks to have been increased to ten yard units to leave the ranks of prototypes. Finally, Hugh Cholet (Dizikilepti), in a conversation with one of the support boats, confessed to being a victim of seasickness persistent since the start of Horta. Course navigation of Les Glenan said about seasickness: "At first you're scared of dying, at the end was afraid to not die ..." The only solution, to do one’s bit, change of rhythm. To forget one hand his ill-being and the other to shorten the ordeal of getting the wooden spoon.
