Four men and a woman in their boat
The suspense for the third place of this second leg between Horta and Les Sables d’Olonne has lasted to the arrival ! But finally the Slovenian Andraz Mihelin who takes the place in the podium in front of Isabelle Joschke et François Salabert. Gerard Marin, easy leader among the production boat is the next solo sailor expected with Fabien Despres around 5pm..
Very grouped arrivals for the third place on the podium of this second leg : hardly one hour of difference for the three solo sailors ! The finish has been very intense since Thursday morning when seven competitors were less than 200 miles from Les Sables d’Olonne… David Sineau (Bretagne Lapins) could break away and maintain enough his advance to ward off Adrien Hardy’s (Biossard) assaults, but behind them, the other three sailors could not distance each other in a rather unstable in strenght and in direction breeze.
Finally, the Slovenian Andraz Mihelin (Adria Mobil Too), who already had finished second in the Azores, is the one who has crossed the line first, more than two hours after the winner of the second leg, and above all, seventeen minutes before Isabelle Joschke (Degrémont) and a little bit more than one hour before François Salabert (Aréas Assurances).
Thanks to this result, Andraz Mihelin remains on the podium of the general classification cumulating both legs, but he has to leave the second place to David Sineau. For Isabelle Joschke, this fourht place in Les Sables d’Olonne reinforces her fourth place in the general classification. On the other hand, François Salabert may not gain one place in the general classification, although he is more than three hours before Fabien Despres (Soitec) expected at 5pm on this Friday. As the skipper of Aréas Assurances was only 1h 49 behind Fabien in the Azores, the hierarchy may change, but at the start in the Azores, François Salabert has been seen above the starting line during the last minute : that may cost him one hour of penalty …
So, are expected this Friday around 5pm, Fabien Despres and especially the Spanish Gerard Marin (Escar l’escala-CN Llanca), easy leader of the production boats category with more than 120 miles in advance to the second, Hervé Piveteau (Jules) ! A huge difference due to a very brave North option as soon as the exit of the Azores. Thanks to this route, he could pass from the 54th position to the 7th in the overall ranking ! Impressive …
At least, we still will have to wait a few hours before seeing Peter Laureyssens (Ecover) in Les Sables d’Olonne : the Belgian is out of energy, thus, he has no more GPS, nor automatic pilot and now has to sail along the Vendée coast as he has landed close to Noirmoutier island… The Australian Nicholas Brennan (Rafiki) should arrive in the evening, then Kristian Hajnsek (Adria Mobil) should cross the finishing line just before sunrise, the leader of the pack should not arrive before Saturday morning.
